Better Angels

“We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
~ Abraham Lincoln

Last week I walked the mall of memorials in Washington D.C. among pink magnolias, white pear, and buds of cherry blossoms. I saw marble columns, bronze statues, fountains and names.

Names among the monuments and flowers.

Names and more names etched on walls.

Names of presidents and pioneers and ground-breakers, soldiers and prisoners of war and heroes and regular people.

I stood with my sons at the Lincoln Memorial and stared at the hands of Lincoln. I looked at Abraham’s eyes and thought about his humility, his words, his death.

Then, I thought about the current circus of politics and bully candidates that peddle division, fear, hatred and racism like narcissistic thugs.

And something deep down felt a little more clear.

We are a country of names that bloom among memorials of those who went before us. And with that blessing comes a grave responsibility to remember and live according to the better angels of our nature.
