The Second Journey: A Call at Midlife

Beyond a Midlife Meltdown

There is one tattered book on my crowded bookshelf which I read and re-read as needed. It holds a key insight into the inevitable transitions of midlife. Chapter nine of The Ragamuffin Gospel, by Brennan Manning is a book-within-a-book. My overused copy contains dog-eared marked-up pages.

The 9th chapter of The Ragamuffin Gospel, entitled “The Second Journey,” puts words to what many people experience sometime between 30-60 years old.  According to late author Manning, a second journey is often preceded by a time of pain and loss. And best case, will end quietly with a new empowerment, wisdom and a coming to a true sense of self. Or as the writer describes:

“The wisdom is that of an adult who has regained equilibrium, stabilized, and found fresh purpose and new dreams. It is a wisdom that gives some things up, lets some things die, and accepts human limitations … the second journey begins when we know we cannot live the afternoon of life according to the morning program.”

Follow me over to The Mudroom to find out the rest of the story, of my meltdown and hope for renewed purpose: The Second Journey: A Call at Midlife.  I’d love to hear your thoughts.
